Overview
Purchasing a domain and hosting from different companies requires bridging the gap so they can communicate seamlessly.
The Connection Mechanism
- Name Servers (NS): When you buy hosting, the provider gives you specific name server addresses (e.g., ns1.hostingprovider.com). Entering these into your domain registrar's settings points your domain to your host.
- A Records: Alternatively, you can use A records to point your domain name directly to your hosting server's specific IPv4 numerical address.
- Propagation Delay: Once updated, global DNS propagation takes anywhere from 2 to 24 hours for the internet to recognize that your domain address now maps to your hosting server.
