How to Transfer Your Domain Name to a New Registrar

Domain Names

Overview

If you are unhappy with your current domain registrar's pricing or customer support, you can transfer your domain to a new provider at any time.

Prerequisites Before Starting a Transfer

  • 60-Day Lock: ICANN rules dictate that domains cannot be transferred within 60 days of initial registration or a previous registrar transfer.
  • Domain Unlock: Log into your current registrar dashboard and disable the "Registrar Lock" or "Transfer Lock" security setting.
  • Authorization Code (EPP Code): Request an Auth/EPP code from your current registrar; you will need to supply this to the new provider.
  • Update Contact Info: Ensure your administrative email address is active, as approval emails will be sent there.

Transfer Steps

  • Navigate to your new registrar's domain transfer page and enter your domain name.
  • Input the EPP authorization code when prompted to verify ownership.
  • Pay the transfer fee (which typically adds an extra 1 year onto your current domain expiration date).
  • Approve the transfer via the confirmation email sent by your administrative contact. The transfer process usually completes within 5 to 7 days.
