Understanding Domain Expiration and the Lifecycle

Domain Names

Overview

Domain names are never truly purchased permanently; instead, they are leased from domain registrars for fixed periods ranging from 1 to 10 years. Failing to renew a domain triggers a strict lifecycle that can lead to permanent loss.

Phases of the Domain Lifecycle

  • Active Period: The time during which you legally own and control the domain name.
  • Grace Period (0 to 45 days post-expiration): If your domain expires, it enters a grace period where your site goes offline, but you can still renew it at the standard baseline cost.
  • Redemption Grace Period (30 to 30 days post-grace): The domain is removed from active registries, and recovery requires paying a hefty redemption fee alongside the standard renewal cost.
  • Pending Delete and Release (5 days): The domain enters final deletion and is eventually released back to the open public market for anyone else to register.
